(1)  be afraid to do sth.不敢，胆怯去做某事，是主观上的原因不去做，意为"怕"； 

     e.g.She is afraid to wake up his husband.她害怕吵醒她的丈夫。（担心他生气）

(2)  be afraid of doing sth.害怕做某事（意为生怕，恐怕）

    E.g. She is afraid of waking him .(她生怕吵醒她的丈夫)

    Are you afraid of snakes?

(4)  I’m afraid +that从句，句中的afraid 意为“恐怕，担心”。

    I’m afraid that you are wrong.（恐怕你错了）

(5) 在答语中，肯定回答常用I’m afraid so.（恐怕是这样的）,

否定回答常用I’m afraid not.（恐怕不是这样的）

另外还有I hope so.（我希望如此） I hope not.（我希望不是这样的） 

I think so.（我认为是这样的）     I don’t think so.（我认为不是这样的）
