Step 1 lead in 1. Students and teacher play a guessing game: Who is he/she? Students are asked to guess who the teacher is through the given description of the teacher. 2. Teacher introduces the topic of today’s lesson: Adjectives to describe personality by focusing Students’ attention on the words about personalities in the descriptions. Step 2 Presentation of words describing personality 1. Students are asked to work in a group of four and discuss the personalities of famous cartoon characters. Teacher gives four choices for each group: the seven dwarfs, the evil queen, Kung Fu Panda, and Tom&Jerry. Each group is free to choose any one of the four choices. 2. Representatives from each group tell the rest of the class their opinions towards the cartoon character. (students are allowed to refer to the dictionary or turn to teacher for help if they have any difficulty.) Step 3 Introduction of Positive adjectives and Negative adjectives 1. Teacher puts all the adjectives that come up in Step 2 into two categories. Category 1: generous helpful kind reliable cheerful happy lovely friendly cute clever warm-hearted strong-minded hard-working Category 2: foolish stubborn lazy jealous selfish cruel evil vain dishonest unkind bad-tempered 2. Teacher guides students to find out that all the adjectives in Category 1 refers to the good points in a person, but the adjectives in Category 2 all refer to the bad points in a person. Thus, the idea of “Positive” and“Negative” is introduced. 我们往往使用一些形容词来描写人的性格特征。有的形容词含有赞许、肯定的意思,我们称之为褒义形容词(positive adjectives),如:honest, brave, friendly 等;有的则含有厌恶、否定的意思,我们称之为贬义形容词(negative adjectives),如:lazy, greedy, selfish 等;有的形容词没有明显的褒贬含义,我们称之为中性形容词(neutral adjectives,如: shy, talkative 等。使用不同的形容词可以体现说话者的不同态度。 3. Students work in pairs and with the help of dictionaries try to find out whether the following are positive or negative: open-minded moody honest polite narrow-minded impolite boring determined happy rude 4. Brainstorming: Students are encouraged to think of as many positive and negative adjectives as possible to describe personality. Step 4 Introduction of synonyms and antonyms 1. The idea of synonyms and antonyms is introduced by referring back to the discussion about the personalities of cartoon characters. (There are many adjectives to describe personality that have the same or similar meanings. Words that have the same or similar meanings are called synonyms. When we want to express the opposite meaning of a word, we use an antonym. ) 2. Students try to tell the synonyms of : shy strong-minded friendly clever foolish hard-working 3. Students try to tell the antonyms of: hard-working talkative polite honest humorous open-minded kind Step 5 Practice of the words learned 1. Guess the word, according to the meaning of the following expressions: Giving or ready to give freely: generous Providing help or always being willing to help others: helpful Easily frightened: timid With one’s mind firmly made up: determined Fond of talking: talkative Strong-willed or determined: strong-minded Dependable: reliable 2. Students are encouraged to make a meaningful sentence according to the picture they see. In the sentence, adjectives to describe personality should be included. 3. Then encourage Ss to use what they’ve learned in the lesson to describe their own English teacher. 4. Finish Part A on page 7. Keys:1. easy-going 2. quiet 3. shy 4. friendly 5. honest 6. hard-working 7. humorous 8. strict Step 6 Homework Review the words learnt in this period and preview Grammar and usage. |
